HISTORY OF HOUSE

The Storrs House was built in 1786 by Richard Salter Storrs, the second pastor of the First Church of Christ in Longmeadow.
Three generations of the Storrs family lived in the house until 1907 when the property was left for a library. The house was moved to its present location in 1930. A bedroom and kitchen on the north side were removed.

The house contains the Storrs family furnishings as well as many of the belonging of Stephen Williams, the first pastor of the Church, 1716-1782. In 1911 the Longmeadow Historical Society purchased the contents of the house. The house itself is owned by the Library.

RESTORATION

When the house was redecorated we found, under many coats of paint, the original colors which coincided with the colors used at the time in Connecticut Valley homes.

The Longmeadow Gardeners have restored the garden and attend to its upkeep. The round stone in the garden was originally used for forming the metal ring on the wagon wheels and was brought from the site of an old blacksmith's shop.

Tours of the Richard Salter Storrs House are available.
